Ursula Bielski will be a speaker at The 2010 Afterlife Paranormal Conference on August 14th 2010 at The House Cafe in Dekalb IL!

Ursula Bielski is the founder of Chicago Hauntings, Inc. An historian, author, and parapsychology enthusiast, she has been writing and lecturing about Chicago’s supernatural folklore and the paranormal for nearly 20 years, and is recognized as a leading authority on the Chicago region’s ghostlore and cemetery history. She is the author of five popular and critically acclaimed books on the same subjects, all published by Lake Claremont Press.

Ursula’s interests in Chicago ghost hunting began at a young age. She grew up in a haunted house on Chicago’s north side and received an early education in Chicago history from her father, a Chicago police officer, who introduced Ursula to the ghosts at Graceland Cemetery, Montrose Point and the old lockup at the storied Maxwell Street Police Station. Since that time Ursula has been involved in countless investigations of haunted sites in and around Chicago, including such notorious locales as Wrigley Field, the Congress Hotel, the Indiana Dunes, the Red Lion Pub, Hull House, Bachelors Grove Cemetery, Rose Hill Cemetery, haunted Archer Avenue, Chinatown, the Eastland disaster site, Death Alley, Dillinger’s Alley and the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre site. Her paranormal travels have also led her to investigate sites as diverse and infamous as the Bell Witch Cave in Tennessee; the Oshkosh, Wisconsin Opera House; New Orleans’ House of the Rising Sun; the City Cemetery in Key West, Florida; and the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Aside from her writing, Ursula has been featured on numerous television documentaries, including productions by the A&E Network, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, The Travel Channel, and PBS. She also appears regularly on local Chicago television and radio and lectures throughout the year at various libraries, historical and professional societies. In addition to her books, Ursula is the author of numerous scholarly articles exploring the links between history and the paranormal, including articles published in the International Journal of Parapsychology. Ursula is a past editor of PA News, the quarterly newsletter of the Parapsychological Association, a past president and board member of the Pi Gamma Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, and holds membership in the Society of Midland Authors.

A graduate of St. Benedict High School in Chicago, Ursula holds a B.A. degree in history from Benedictine University and an M.A. in American cultural and intellectual history from Northeastern Illinois University. Her academic explorations include the Spiritualist movement of the 19th century and its transformation into psychical research and parapsychology, and the relationships among belief, experience, science, and religion.

This past weekend, Michael Kleen of the Legends and Lore of Illinois was graciously invited to the 2010 “Festival of Fright” Indy Horror Film Festival at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. Produced by Spook Show Entertainment & Festivals of Fright, the two day event was hosted by Master Ron Fitzgerald, legendary Gothic Illusionist. Films included gems such as The Landlord, Michael Morlock’s Supernatural World, and Devil’s Creek. The night of May 1, only the bravest moviegoers remained after hours to take a tour of the haunted theater itself, led by Willy Adkins and the Illinois Ghost Hunters. Willy Adkins

I’m very excited about it! Its amazing to think of all of the progress IGH has made. Not every paranormal team can say they have worked for not only residential and commercial clients but even government offices! And the most rewarding part for me, just knowing all of the people we have helped feel more comfortable in their homes and places of business.

We’ve seen the great line up of speakers for the open house, but do you have any surprises in store for us?

This seminar is going to be amazing! We are all about supporting others in the industry and working together. That is why we have invited so many outside teams and investigators to come in and take part in the event. As far as other surprises, nothing to off the wall crazy.. But I can say you will learn a lot from the people you encounter. Some amazing stories, points of view (you might not have considered before) and what it takes to build and grow a paranormal group.

Will tickets be available at the door?

YES. I have made presale tickets available via the web on the IGH website (www.IllinoisGhostHunters.com) to ensure entry to the event for ticket holders. Provided the near 175 person capacity isn’t reached, Tickets are going to be available at the door.

What is the strangest thing you’ve encountered in all your years of paranormal investigation?

Before I started doing this work about 5 years ago, I had never experienced anything paranormal. I was the “skeptic,” the one who had an open mind but an answer for everything. With my experience over the last 5 years I’ve learned one thing for sure.. If you look long enough, you will experience things. I would have to write a book to share all of the stories (ranging from down poring rain inside a concrete jail cell, to possession and even being physically scared by something not seen to the naked eye).. That is what our seminars are for, to educate and exchange information gathered from our experiences and research.

Do you have anything else you would like to note about the upcoming open house seminar?

Yes. The event starts at 3pm, however your able to come in early to get a seat. This event is all ages, however parental guidance is suggested for younger attendees. Great food and drinks are also available at the venue, so please help support the venue for supporting us! Fallowing the IGH Seminar is another event called “Paranormal Escapade”. It is a music event along with some other artwork on display. Seminar visitors are encouraged to hang out for the later show (at discount) to continue to meet and greet with investigators, authors and have a good time!
